How to Prep for a Move With Kids or Pets

Moving day is a big deal—and when kids or pets are involved, it can come with a few extra challenges. With the right prep, though, your whole crew (four-legged included) can handle the transition with less stress and more confidence.

Start With a Conversation

Even toddlers feel more secure when they know what’s happening. Talk to your kids about the move, show them photos of the new home, and give them a small task to help them feel involved:

  • Let them pack a “favorites box”
  • Show them a map or picture of the new place
  • Talk through the move in simple terms

Keep Routines Steady

In the days before and after your move, try to stick to:

  • Regular mealtimes
  • Nap and bedtime schedules
  • Daily walks or play routines (for pets and kids!)

Familiar patterns offer comfort when everything else is changing.

Create a Safe Zone

Set aside one quiet room during the move and fill it with:

  • Water and snacks
  • Toys, books, or blankets
  • A bed/crate for pets

Post a note on the door to keep movers from accidentally opening it.

Pack an Essentials Bag

Have a 24-hour go-bag ready with:

  • Medications
  • Pet food and water bowls
  • Diapers, wipes, and extra clothes
  • Favorite snacks and toys
  • Phone chargers

You’ll be glad to have the basics within easy reach.

Get a Helping Hand

If possible, have a trusted friend or family member:

  • Watch your child or pet during loading/unloading
  • Take them out for a walk or playdate
  • Stay with them at the new house while you get settled

Bonus Tip: Update Pet Tags and Microchips

Moving far? Before the move, make sure your pet’s:

  • Collar tag includes your new contact info

  • Microchip is registered with your updated address
