How to Declutter Before a Move (Without Losing Your Mind)

Moving is the perfect time to take stock of what you own—and let go of what you don't need. A cleaner, lighter move makes for an easier transition into your new space (and saves you money on moving day). Here's how to declutter before a move the stress-free way:

Start Early, Go Room by Room

Trying to declutter the whole house at once can get overwhelming fast. Instead:
Focus on one space at a time (start with closets or bathrooms)

  • Set a timer for 30 minutes a day
  • Sort items into three categories: Keep, Donate/Sell, Toss

Ask Yourself the Right Questions

If you’re unsure about something, try these prompts:

  • Have I used this in the past year?
  • Would I buy this again today?
  • Does it have a place in my new home?

If the answer is no, it’s probably time to part ways.

Where to Donate or Sell

Clearing out clutter doesn’t have to mean waste:

  • Donate gently used items to local charities or thrift stores
  • Sell furniture or electronics on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist
  • Drop off e-waste (old cords, chargers) at a recycling center

Decluttering With Kids or Pets Around?

Keep it light and simple:

  • Let kids help pick what to keep or donate
  • Create a “keep bin” for sentimental items you aren’t ready to toss
  • For pets, go through supplies and toss anything expired or unused

Bonus Tip: Don’t Pack the Clutter

Every item you move takes time, energy, and space. If you wouldn’t unpack it with excitement, don’t pack it at all.
